John Newton, a former slave-ship captain turned Anglican clergyman, wrote the most famous hymn in the English language, "Amazing Grace," along with "Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken." His texts, many from the Olney Hymns, speak from a vivid personal experience of grace.
