Let us rejoice in Christ the Lord
Create PowerPoint slides from this hymn →A hymn of assurance by John Newton (1774), affirming that believers are secure in Christ despite weakness and opposition. The text draws on Colossians 3:3 ('your life is hid with Christ in God') to proclaim that nothing can ultimately harm or defeat those who belong to Christ.
Verse 1
Let us rejoice in Christ the Lord
Who claims us for His own;
The hope established on His Word
Can ne'er be overthrown.
Verse 2
Though many foes beset us round,
And feeble is our arm,
Our life is hid with Christ in God
Beyond the reach of harm.
Verse 3
Weak as we are, we shall not faint
Or fainting, cannot fail;
Jesus, the strength of every saint,
For ever must prevail.
Verse 4
Though now He's unperceived by sense
Faith sees Him always near;
Our guide, our glory, our defence.
To save from every fear.
Verse 5
As surely as He overcame
And conquered death and sin,
So surely those that trust His Name
Will all His triumph win.
