Poor, weak, and worthless though I am
Create PowerPoint slides from this hymn →A humble confession of personal unworthiness paired with confident trust in Christ as a powerful, loving friend and Saviour. Written by John Newton in 1779, it reflects the evangelical warmth characteristic of his hymn-writing.
Verse 1
Poor, weak, and worthless though I am,
I have a rich, almighty friend;
Jesus, the Saviour, is His name;
He freely loves, and without end.
Verse 2
He ransomed me from hell with blood,
And by His power my foes controlled;
He found me wand'ring far from God,
And brought me to His chosen fold,
Verse 3
He cheers my heart, my want supplies,
And says that I shall shortly be
Enthroned with Him above the skies;
O what a friend is Christ to me!
