Isaac Watts, often called the "Father of English Hymnody," broke from strict metrical-psalm singing to write freely composed hymns such as "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross," "Joy to the World," and "O God, Our Help in Ages Past." His paraphrases of the Psalms reshaped congregational song in the English-speaking church.
