The Agnus Dei ('Lamb of God'), an ancient liturgical text dating to the 7th century, here attributed to the Florentine reformer and martyr Girolamo Savonarola (1452–1498). It petitions Christ as the Lamb of God for mercy and peace, and is widely used in Eucharistic worship.

Lord, we pray not
for tranquillity,
nor that our tribulations
may cease;

we pray for thy
spirit and thy love,
that thou grant us strength
and grace to overcome adversity;
through Jesus Christ.
Amen.
