Softly Now the Light of Day
Create PowerPoint slides from this hymn →An evening hymn by Episcopal Bishop George Washington Doane, first published in 1824. It meditates on the close of day as a figure for life's end, asking God for pardon of sin and ultimate rest in his presence.
Verse 1
Softly now the light of day
Fades upon out sight away:
Free from care, from labor free,
Lord, we would commune with Thee.
Verse 2
Thou, whose allpervading eye
Nought escapes, without, within,
Pardon each infirmity,
Open fault, and secret sin.
Verse 3
Soon from us the light of day
Shall forever pass away;
Then, from sin and sorrow free,
Take us, Lord, to dwell with Thee.
