Hark the Glad Sound
Create PowerPoint slides from this hymn →An Advent hymn by Philip Doddridge (1735) based on Isaiah 61 and Luke 4:18, celebrating the coming of Christ as the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy. It describes Jesus releasing captives, healing the brokenhearted, and bringing liberty to all.
Verse 1
Hark, the glad sound! the Savior comes!
The Savior promised long;
Let every heart prepare a throne,
And every voice a song.
Verse 2
On Him the Spirit, largely poured,
Exerts its sacred Fire; Wisdom and might,
and zeal and love,
His holy Breast inspire.
Verse 3
He comes the pris'ners to release,
In Satan's bondage held;
The gates of brass before Him burst,
The iron fetters yield.
Verse 4
He comes from thickest films of vice To clear the mental ray,
And on the eyeballs of the blind To pour celestial day.
Verse 5
He comes the broken heart to bind,
The bleeding soul to cure;
And with the treasures of His grace T'enrich the humble poor.
Verse 6
His silver trumpets publish loud The jub'lee of the Lord Our debts are all remitted now Our heritage restored.
Verse 7
Our glad hosannas, Prince of Peace,
Thy welcome shall proclaim;
And Heav'n's eternal arches ring With Thy belovèd name.
