Guide us, O Thou great Jehovah
Create PowerPoint slides from this hymn →A beloved 18th-century Welsh hymn by William Williams Pantycelyn, translated into English by Peter Williams in 1771. Drawing on the imagery of Israel's wilderness journey, it expresses the believer's dependence on God's guidance, provision, and strength through life.
Verse 1
Guide us, O Thou great Jehovah,
Pilgrims through this barren land;
We are weak, but Thou art mighty;
Hold us by Thy Powerful hand:
Bread of heaven
Feed us now and evermore.
Verse 2
Open wide the living fountain
Whence the healing waters flow;
Be Thyself our cloudy pillar
All the dreary desert through:
Strong deliv'rer
Be Thou still our strength and shield.
Verse 3
While we tread this vale of sorrow
May we in Thy love abide;
Keep us, O our gracious Saviour!
Cleaving closely to Thy side:
Still relying
On our Father's changeless love.
Verse 4
Saviour, come! We long to see Thee,
Long to dwell with Thee above;
And to know, in full communion,
All the sweetness of Thy love:
Come, Lord Jesus!
Take Thy waiting people home.
