Grace! 'tis a charming sound
Create PowerPoint slides from this hymn →An 18th-century English hymn celebrating divine grace as the source of salvation, guidance, and eternal life, originally written by Philip Doddridge and adapted by Augustus Toplady. The hymn traces grace from the sinner's first step on the heavenly road to the recording of their name in the book of life.
Verse 1
Grace! 'tis a charming sound,
Harmonious to the ear;
Heaven with the echo shall resound,
And all the earth shall hear.
Verse 2
Grace taught my wandering feet
To tread the heavenly road;
And new supplies each hour I meet,
While pressing on to God.
Verse 3
'Twas grace that wrote my name
In life's eternal book;
'Twas grace that gave me to the Lamb
Who all my sorrows took.
Verse 4
Grace taught my soul to pray,
And, made my eyes o'erflow;
'Tis grace has kept me to this day,
And will not let me go.
Verse 5
O let that grace inspire
My soul with strength divine;
May all my powers to Thee aspire,
And all my days be Thine.
Verse 6
Grace all the work shall crown
Through everlasting days;
It lays in heaven the topmost stone,
And well deserves the praise.
