A communion hymn by Victorian poet Elizabeth Rundle Charles meditating on the Lord's Supper as the fullest proclamation of the gospel. It contrasts Christ's costly sacrifice with the freely given gift of redemption received by believers.

Verse 1

No gospel like this feast
Spread for us, Lord, by Thee;
No prophets or evangelists
Preach the glad news more free.

Verse 2

All our redemption cost,
All our redemption won;
All it has won for us, the lost,
All it cost Thee, the Son.

Verse 3

Thine was the bitter price,
Ours is the free gift given;
Thine was the blood of sacrifice,
Ours is the wine of heaven.

Verse 4

Here we would rest midway
As on a sacred height;
That darkest and that brightest day
Meeting before our sight.

Verse 5

From that dark depth of woes
Thy love for us has trod,
We soar to heights of blest repose
Thy love prepares with God.

Verse 6

Thus, from self's chains released,
One sight alone we see,
Still at the cross, while at this feast,
We see Thee, only Thee!
