A Victorian-era prayer hymn by Edward Henry Bickersteth (1825–1906) invoking Christ as the Light of the world to illuminate and teach believers as they gather to study Scripture. The three stanzas ask that God's word be discerned in its fullness, learned by experience, and increasingly dwelt upon.

Verse 1

Light of the world, shine on our souls;
Thy grace to us afford;
And while we meet to learn Thy truth
Be Thou our teacher, Lord.

Verse 2

May we its riches, power, and depth,
Its holiness discern;
Its joyful news of saving grace
By blest experience learn.

Verse 3

Thus may Thy word be dearer still,
And studied more each day;
And as it richly dwells within,
Thyself in it display.
