To Calvary, Lord, in spirit now
Create PowerPoint slides from this hymn →A 19th-century devotional hymn by Sir Edward Denny (1796–1889), a Plymouth Brethren writer, meditating on Christ's atoning sacrifice at Calvary. It is frequently used in communion services as worshippers are invited to contemplate the cross in spirit.
Verse 1
To Calvary, Lord, in spirit now
Our weary souls repair,
To dwell upon Thy dying love,
And taste its sweetness there.
Verse 2
Sweet resting-place of every heart
That feels the plague of sin,
Yet knows the deep, mysterious joy
Of peace with God within.
Verse 3
There, through Thine hour of deepest woe,
Thy suffering spirit passed;
Grace there its wondrous victory gained,
And love endured its last.
Verse 4
O Lamb of God! Thy bleeding wounds,
With cords of love divine,
Have drawn our willing hearts to Thee,
And linked our life with Thine.
Verse 5
Our longing eyes would fain behold
That bright and blessed brow,
Once wrung with bitterest anguish, wear
Its crown of glory now.
Verse 6
Thy sympathies and hopes are ours:
We long, O Lord, to see
Creation all—below, above,
Redeemed and blessed by Thee.
