My God, my Father, while I stray
Create PowerPoint slides from this hymn →Written by Charlotte Elliott in 1834 as a prayer of submission to God's will, echoing the Lord's Prayer. It calls believers to trust divine providence amid life's hardships and willingly surrender personal desires.
Verse 1
My God, my Father, while I stray
Far from my home in life's rough way,
O teach me from my heart to say,
Thy will be done.
Verse 2
If dark my path and hard my lot,
May I be still and murmur not;
But breathe the prayer divinely taught
Thy will be done.
Verse 3
If Thou shouldst call me to resign
What most I prize—it ne'er was mine,
I only yield Thee what is Thine:
Thy will be done.
Verse 4
Should pining sickness waste away
My life in premature decay,
My Father! help me still to say,
Thy will be done.
Verse 5
Control my will from day to day,
Blend it with Thine, and take away
All that now makes it hard to say,
Thy will be done.
Verse 6
And when on earth I breathe no more
The prayer oft mixed with tears before,
I'll sing on heaven's blissful shore,
Thy will be done.
