Before the throne of God above
Create PowerPoint slides from this hymn →Written in 1863 by Irish poet Charitie Lees Smith Bancroft, this hymn meditates on the believer's assurance before God through Christ's perpetual intercession as High Priest. It draws on Hebrews 4 and 7 to affirm that the sinless Saviour's atoning death satisfies divine justice and secures the sinner's pardon.
Verse 1
Before the throne of God above
I have a strong, a perfect plea,
A great High Priest, whose name is Love,
Who ever lives and pleads for me.
Verse 2
When Satan tempts me to despair,
Telling of evil yet within,
Upward I look, and see Him there
Who made an end of all my sin.
Verse 3
Because the sinless Saviour died
My sinful soul is counted free;
For God, the Just, is satisfied
To look on Him and pardon me.
Verse 4
Behold him there! the once slain Lamb!
My perfect, spotless Righteousness,
The great unchangeable I AM,
The King of glory and of grace.
Verse 5
One with Himself, I cannot die;
My soul is purchased by His blood;
My life is hid with Christ on high,
With Christ, my Saviour and my God.
