Charles Albert Tindley, a Methodist minister in Philadelphia born to an enslaved father, was a pioneer of the African American gospel hymn. His "Stand by Me" and "We'll Understand It Better By and By" helped shape the genre, and "I'll Overcome Some Day" is widely seen as a forerunner of "We Shall Overcome."
